Cedar Shakes and Shingles
Discover The Stunning Appearance and Craftsmanship Of Cedar Roofing
Cedar Roofing
Cedar shingles and shakes are more than a historic roofing material. Our ancestors have used wood for all buildings for centuries. Wood roofing has been around for centuries because of how it performs and the beauty of it. Here in the Northeast, we’re blessed to be able to use this beautiful material and practice our craft.
What Is Wood (Cedar) Roofing?
Cedar shakes and shingles are an absolutely head-turning roofing system. They are made from hand-cut cedar, and are either cedar shingles or shakes. We typically install cedar roofing made from western red cedar or California redwood trees. Sizes vary depending on what country you live in, but here in the US we install 18″ and 24″ sizes. Cedar also come in 3 different grades, and each one has different costs and benefits.
Benefits Of Cedar Shakes and Shingles
There are numerous benefits to cedar roofing. Besides the unique, rustic and historic beauty of cedar roofing, there are multiple benefits that make cedar roofing an incredible investment. Cedar shakes and shingles are the most wind-resistant roofing material. On average, cedar shingles resist up to 173mph winds, and cedar shakes resist up to 245mph winds! Both cedar shakes and shingles last around 50 years. They can last even longer with the proper maintenance and care. Cedar roofing is an all-natural roofing product, and is biodegradable. It will have a lower environmental impact than synthetic roofing materials, like asphalt roofing shingles.
Cedar Shingles vs Cedar Shakes
Cedar Shingles
The cedar shingles are sawn on both sides, giving them a smoother and more uniform look. The thickness is consistent throughout each piece, providing this clean look. This look is great for more modern homes, but still works well on traditional-style homes. Cedar shingles are less expensive due to the fact that they weigh less than shakes. They last 30-40 years on average.
Cedar Shakes
Cedar shakes are uneven and rugged, creating that true traditional look of adorning your roof with wood. They are much thicker, and each butt end varies in size (3/8″ to 1″). Since cedar shakes are thicker, they provide better insulation, and are more durable. However, cedar shakes are generally more expensive due to the thickness and skilled labor required to install them.
Are Cedar Shakes Or Shingles Better?
It’s truly up to preference, as they are both fantastic. They both look extremely beautiful, but whichever aesthetic pleases you more is the best option. Cedar shakes and shingles are extremely durable against the elements, and are the most wind resistant shingle available. The only downside to both of shakes and shingles is they aren’t fire resistant. To counter this, we have them factory-treated with a fire retardant.
Cedar Roofing Grades
Cedar Shake Roof Gradings
When it comes to cedar, there are an almost overwhelming amount of minute details. That’s why you should rely on a professional cedar roofing company on Long Island! These gradings apply to both cedar roofing shakes and shingles. There are three grades for cedar: common, select, and 100% straight grain. Each grading has a different meaning, so let’s explore them.
100% Straight Grain Cedar (Premium)
100% straight grain is the premium version of cedar shakes and shingles. It signifies that the cedar was cut absolutely vertically. Complete vertical cuts will prevent the cedar from curling up or sideways. This is considered the best cedar roofing grade you can get. We only install and recommend premium grade cedar shake roofing, as it’s guaranteed to not have any problems.
Select Cedar Shake (No. 2)
The select grade for cedar shake roofing means that there will be mostly straight edge grain, but some flat grain. These cedar shakes are cheaper, and don’t last as long as premium grade cedar shake roofing.
Common Cedar Shake (No. 3)
This grade is the worst grade of cedar shake roofing. It’s composed of a mix of straight grain and flat grain. It clearly contains imperfections, and will end up warping and rotting after 10-20 years.

Frequent Questions We’re Asked As A Professional Roofing Company
How Long Do Cedar Shakes and Shingles Last?
Both cedar shakes and shingles last around 40-50 years. The shingles will have a shorter lifespan of around 40 years because they are thinner. Cedar shakes will last 50+ years due to the thickness and unevenness of each shingle. However, each style can have its lifespan thoroughly extended with the proper maintenance and treatment.
Are Cedar Shingles Heat Resistant?
Unfortunately, the only downside to beautiful cedar shake roofing is that they are not naturally fire resistant. Fire can cause the cedar shakes to combust if they are untreated. Also, if exposed to the an area with an extremely warm climate and harsh sun, they can become brittle. However, there are multiple fire-preventive methods. We recommend having the cedar shakes be treated with factory-coated fire retardants.
